Contentment

Throughout history, there have been five major turning points that dramatically reshaped the known world: the fall of the Roman Empire, the rise of Islam, the Black Death, the Arab Conquests, and the Industrial Revolution. Each marked a complete shift in the human condition — and now, we find ourselves living through another such moment: the Information Age.

This age is sometimes referred to as the "Computer Age," but that’s an oversimplification. It’s like calling a delivery truck driver the creator of the gift he delivers. While the driver is essential, he isn’t the source of the gift — he’s just the carrier. Likewise, computers aren’t the message; they’re the medium. They deliver information but do not contain wisdom.

Change today is happening at breakneck speed. The fall of Rome unfolded over centuries; the Industrial Age took a hundred years to mature. But the Digital Age arrived almost overnight, like a thunderclap. It’s altering how we live, think, and interact — not yearly, not monthly, but daily and for many, this is deeply unsettling.

The signs of upheaval are everywhere — politics, science, economics, education, social structures — all are under pressure. We are each being asked: Who are you, and what do you stand for? Even avoiding the question is, in itself, an answer. The world is watching, watching deeply in what America is doing. Will this era bring lasting transformation for the good of all or benefit only the few? Will we cling to the old or embrace the new?

The determining factor will be character — individually and collectively. Your understanding of being “under God” is now crucial. This is the doorway through which Guru leads us into deeper communion with the Infinite. In Sikh Dharma, Dharam Raj — akin to St. Peter in Christian tradition — governs karmic law. Character has always mattered, but now it’s unmistakably visible. The karmic mirror is right in front of us.

So, we ask:
How do I keep up with this age?
What do I do with all this overwhelming information?
What’s real? Who do I trust?

The despair can be intense. But the truth is that Contentment is always worth pursuing. Is it even possible for someone ordinary like me? The mind floods us with doubts. But the first step is understanding that true contentment doesn’t dwell in the world — it lives in the Infinite.

Contentment begins with total relaxation — the kind that comes when you fully believe you’re under the guidance and protection of God. Faith is the desire to experience that peace. Belief is when you become the experience of that peace. Many stall at the doorstep of faith, not because they can’t go further, but because they’re trapped by habit, memory, and a belief system that’s grown rigid.

You are not your memory. Your memory is you. It controls you. — until you realize this. Once you do, you gain the freedom to change. The will to change is the beginning of liberation.

God rewards righteousness — in thought, speech, and action — all flowing from compassion and love. Virtue is a universal teaching, expressed differently in many paths. How far you go depends on your path, your karma, and your devotion, but the path is open to everyone. It has worked for me. Why not for you?

Changing your memory is easier when you are no longer a prisoner to it. How can you control something that controls you? It sounds complex, but there are tools — especially mantras — designed to help you outwit the mind.

Don’t get confused. You and your memory are not the same. Memory is a tool — powerful, but dangerous when misunderstood. If unchecked, it will make a fool out of you. But remember, we’re all fools in God’s eyes until we awaken. That’s where the spiritual journey truly begins.

Fear and doubt can lead you to despair or to contentment, or both. It all depends on your projection and your focus. Choose your mentors wisely, because the mind will begin to follow whatever or whoever you project onto as your deepest desire. If that person or teaching is great, so might you become. But beware: when the relationship is real, deep, and karmically charged, you may inherit both the light and the shadow of your mentor

True contentment comes from following the teachings of a genuine spiritual teacher. Choose carefully. Once you commit, there is no turning back. It is both now or never and now and forever. At this point, your will must bow to your teacher’s wisdom. You step out of the way.

Can that go wrong? Yes — but when the teacher leads you higher, beyond themselves, then the mentorship is pure. It’s about the student's growth, not the teacher's ego. The right teacher opens the gate to a higher court of reality.

Through God’s love, the impossible becomes possible. There are no limits to the Creator. The path begins in contentment.

Yes, the journey can seem daunting. It demands sacrifice. The ultimate sacrifice: surrender of ego. Surrender of the self.

But along the way come beautiful gifts  come your way. These gifts are blessings a hundred thousand times greater than anything you give up. Prayer helps.

  • Prayer without prejudice
  • Prayer with purpose
  • Prayer of gratitude
  • Prayer in service
  • Prayer through compassion
  • Prayer for union with God

This kind of prayer clears all doubt. It is not difficult. In fact, it brings great joy.

This path of contentment is for everyone. It’s not exclusive. It’s not far away. It’s closer than you think. The door is always open.
